Our Verdict: Brewer’s Edge Mash and Boil 7.5 Gallon Electric Home Brewing System
If you’ve already tried looking around for a homebrewing system to buy, I’m sure you’ve come across the Brewer’s Edge Mash and Boil several times.
It’s an understatement to say that this is one of the most popular names out there and many home brewers turn to this for them to have as an entry brewing system when starting out with all grain.
As for me…
The compactness and portability of this one-vessel makes it a perfect buddy for home brewing junkies like me who moves around a lot.
This single vessel electric brewing wonder features a double wall stainless steel construction with a stainless steel grain basket (or malt pipe, whatever you like to call it) in which you can put your grains in for the mash.
The double wall stainless steel vessel can hold up to 16 lbs of malt grains and 7.5 gallons of liquid which can yield around 5 gallons of beer output.
Now that’s not so bad…
…especially if you live in a studio type apartment or even smaller.
But unlike other brewing systems, the Brewer’s Edge Mash and Boil’s grain basket isn’t made of wire mesh so draining the wort out from the grain won’t be as super easy.
Nevertheless…
…the very easy to use temperature control panel makes up for it with just less than 5 buttons for a smooth temperature setting. Now even a teenager or your old man can easily operate this without much fuss.
At the lower side of the unit, you’ll find two switches, one for the power and one for the heating element. You have a choice between 1000 watts or 1600 watts if you want to crank the heat up for your boil.
On the other side…
There’s the switch for the built-in boil with pump. This pump is located outside the unit so it’s not a nuisance to clean afterwards.
This unit comes with a recirculation arm and you have the choice to attach it yourself for an easy, more efficient wort circulation and temperature regulation.
The internal sparging basket allows you to sparge and drain smoothly to get your wort ready for the boil.
Unfortunately…
This unit doesn’t come with its own wort immersion chiller so that’s quite a shame. Good thing, I had my 12” diameter copper coil chiller with me and it’s able to fit snugly inside the vessel. Aside from the components, this Editor’s Choice awardee also has something to say with its technical features and functions.
The Brewer’s Edge Mash and Boil boasts of an adjustable runtime preset at 3.5 hours safety as well as a delayed start timer.
The delayed start timer lets you program the unit to turn on and work its magic up to 24 hours after setting so I was able to wake up in the morning of brew day with my hot sparge water already waiting and ready for me.
The Brewer’s Edge Mash and Boil digital control panel is also very intuitive and easy to use with a user-friendly interface through which you don’t only get to control and monitor temperature but change the temp reading to either Fahrenheit or Celsius.
Now that’s ultimate convenience for everyone.
Let me tell you…
Half of the brewing process already passed by me and I didn’t even notice it until it’s time to finally transfer the wort to the fermentor!
Thankfully, the Brewer’s Edge Mash and Boil also comes with a built-in spigot so I didn’t have to deal with tubings for transfer anymore.
Well, I did attach a tubing to the spigot for a cleaner transfer but that’s just about that.
I didn’t really have to use extra attachments for this unit as it’s already working fine just by itself…
Except for an insulating jacket.
Yes, I did use an insulating jacket for this.
Good news: This unit has its own thermostat that’s located inside the vessel to monitor temperature changes throughout the brewing process.
The bad news?
It’s located on the very bottom of the vessel so it’s only able to detect the temperature at the bottom of the mash.
But of course, nothing can’t be solved with a strip thermometer and an efficient recirculation pump to regulate heat throughout the whole vessel.
Let me just tell you,
There will be temperature fluctuations throughout the process and there will be lots of them.
So I advise you to get your own insulation jacket and once it’s on, the brewing system will work perfectly like magic.
All in all, the Brewer’s Edge Mash and Boil 7.5 gallon brewing system comes with a sparging basket, a stainless steel valve mash, a recirculation pump with recirculation arm, built-in spigot, digital controller, and a built-in thermostat.
